Adam Olsen on Working Together

In this video, I address partisan politics in the British Columbia Legislature. I discuss how the BC Liberals and BC NDP all vote together on important policy debates that impact the lives of British Columbians. I highlight how the BC Green Party is committed to working together, with all the Member’s elected to represent their constituents in Victoria.

Hi, my name is Adam Olsen, BC Green Party candidate in Saanich North and the Islands. I was the Interim Leader of the BC Greens for nearly two and a half years. I watched the legislature daily.

Votes are black and white, they all end in either yes or no. Each decision should be difficult because they impact our lives, our place and our future. Decisions should be made with the best interests of the people and province in mind. But, our government members vote for the interests of their party, they group vote.

Forty-eight MLA’s on the Liberal side of the house say one thing, thirty-five MLA’s on the NDP side of the house vote to say another, rarely do they agree. What is more rare is disagreement between benchmates, and if they do, they are likely looking for a new bench, tow the line or you're out.

This process does not result in good public policy, it only benefits political parties, not people and the province.

Governance in British Columbia is fundamentally broken, whether you lean right or left, both sides are part of the problem, the balance the BC Liberals are fighting to maintain is nothing more than the status quo.

We need a diversity of voices in government to unbalance the status quo, it starts right here in Saanich North and the Islands.

That’s one of the reasons why I’m Green, the BC Greens operate differently. We agree on principles and values, we don’t have to agree on every single issue, but we have a firm commitment to work collaboratively with each other and all other MLA’s no matter the colour of the banner next to their name, for the benefit of all British Columbians.

As the campaign moves along you will see in my videos and in public how we Greens plan on working together.

We will listen to our constituents, we will be visible, accessible and transparent, just as Andrew Weaver has been.

Over the coming weeks and months, I encourage you to check out the BC Greens, I think you will like what you see.

Note: There are 47 BC Liberal MLA's as Marc Dalton stepped away from the BC Liberal Caucus to seek the Conservative nomination in the 2015 Federal election.
