Adam Olsen: Steadfast in opposition to Malahat LNG

Brentwood Bay, BC - Earlier this week, Steelhead LNG, the project proponent of Malahat LNG, announced that Alberta natural gas supplier Seven Generations had purchased a significant minority stake in the company. Adam Olsen, Deputy Leader of the BC Green Party and Candidate for Saanich North and the Islands remains steadfast in his public opposition to the Malahat LNG project.

“The proposed gas pipeline and liquefaction plant will have massive environmental, economic and social impacts in the communities surrounding the Saanich Inlet. Gas liquefaction plants do not make good neighbours and are not compatible with the diverse economy that already exists in the Inlet and surrounding communities. This proposal puts hundreds, if not thousands of jobs at risk and it is an entirely unacceptable proposal for Bamberton.”

“Saanich North & the Islands is uniquely positioned to take advantage of compatible economic development that does not damage our pristine environment and decrease our quality of life. Let’s embrace innovation in our high-tech, light-manufacturing, and tourism sectors. Let’s nurture thousands of entry, mid and high level jobs that come with these industries. Let’s preserve our natural common spaces and sell experiences and a high quality of life. Let’s not race to the bottom.”

“The Malahat LNG proposal is still alive and it continues to inch forward. LNG is not better for the environment than coal and Steelhead LNG have failed to respectfully engage First Nations around the Saanich Inlet. They have consistently disregarded and undermined the four W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations who have significant Aboriginal and treaty rights in the Inlet and who have all expressed their out-right opposition to the project.”

“The BC Liberals empty promises of an LNG industry that would create 100,000 jobs, a trillion dollar hit to the GDP and a debt-free province have failed to materialize, despite every legislative effort by the Liberal government over the past three years, even after a generational sell-out.”
