I'm taking a few days off with my family over the holidays, giving me a chance to catch my breath and reflect on 2014.
After such an incredible year, there's one thing I don't think I could express enough - how grateful I am for you and everything we've accomplished together.
In particular, I want to thank you for keeping in touch with Andrew Weaver, my colleagues and I through email. I understand how crowded our inboxes get, so I really value being connected this way.
One of my fondest memories of the past year is the day our Green MLA Andrew Weaver stood up in the Legislature and proposed the first Green-sponsored amendment to a government's Throne Speech. In his amendment, Andrew asked the Legislature to halt the expansion of thermal coal exports in BC. Thermal coal is the single worst contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. It's so bad that all of our Pacific Climate Action partners - Washington, Oregon and California - have banned thermal coal exports outright.
Sadly for our once-laudable climate change policies, every single MLA voted against his motion. But nevertheless, it was a significant step forward in advocating for strong environmental leadership, not to mention all of the other work we have done on education, a diversified sustainable 21st century economy, healthcare and social justice.
What I'm looking forward to most in 2015 is the opportunity to elect more Green MLAs to work with Andrew in Victoria. We know there will be by-elections in key ridings that we can win. This is tremendously exciting.
Finally, I would like to wish you a very happy holiday season from my family to yours.
And thank you again for all that you do for the Greens, and even more importantly, for British Columbia.
